Meet the Ocean, Learn to Pack and How Language Shapes Us - 6.5.18

HOW LANGUAGE SHAPES US
There are 196 countries in the world, but 7,000 distinct languages. And, as cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares in this fascinating TED Talk, language has a huge effect on our behavior. Learn from her research with an Aboriginal community in Australia (that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right for everything) and others whose language guides reasoning and actually shapes the way the brain functions.

TO ROLL OR NOT TO ROLL? HOW TO PACK A SUITCASE.
Here is the complete guide to all things packing, storing, rolling, zipping and organizing from Conde Nast Traveler. I learned a few things (packing cubes, people. Packing cubes!) and hope you do too.
WHO I'M FOLLOWING:
To keep my cousins and I safe in Jersey Shore waters (and maybe to remind us of our place in the world), my grandmother shares her favorite line: "That ocean's bigger than you!" It's also amazing, which is why I love getting updates from Meet the Ocean, an educational non-profit that shares the wonder of the ocean through engaging storytelling, interviews and science in podcasts and social media.

You'll learn from ocean explorers, National Geographic photographers, naturalists, MTO Executive Director Paul North and an 11-year-old phenom correspondent, Charlotte Fisher. It's well worth meeting this organization.

Have you traveled under the tuscan sun? Ate, prayed and loved?
Taken a walk in the woods? Then you know the power that a good book has in inspiring action. Writer, TED talker and Royal Literary Fund fellow Anne Morgan took a year to read a book from every country in the world. (Yup. Every one.)  Here are her top 10 reads from that amazing project.

WHEN NATURE WRITER'S SHARE THEIR FAVORITE UK WALKS...AND PUBS
Still wearing your Royal Wedding fascinator around town? If Harry and Meghan sparked a UK interest in you, check out this list of great walks as written by nature writers. The writing in these pieces is so much more evocative than your typical "go here!" blurb. A pleasure to read.

If they do inspire a UK trip, stop by St. George's Chapel while you're there!

Take a look. Take a really close look at the animals that inhabit this earth. They are mind-bogglingly amazing. Joel Sartore is on a mission to capture as many as possible with his 25-year project, the Photo Ark, getting closer than just about anyone. While I love nature and wildlife photographers who capture animals in their natural habitat, Joel's portraits are next level in making the viewer really see the beauty and uniqueness of each animal. I can't help but stare and I hope you do too.

Follow Joel at @joelsartore and learn more about the National Geographic Photo Ark

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES IN TRAVEL
I came across Zach Anner's videos years ago and they still inspire me today. Zach is a comedian, actor and writer with cerebral palsy who wanted to start a travel show for reasons you'll see in this video. It's adventure, it's friendship at its best, and it's a guy who's spirit is so infectious he now has a show on Oprah Winfrey's Own Network.

Click Here for the adventure of Zach's friends bringing him to the Cascades in Blacksburg, Virginia.

A LESSON FROM THE WORST DRUMMER IN BELIZE
If you have the opportunity to listen to a Garifuna band from Belize, or see one live like I did while working aboard a small cruise ship, you'll be carried away by their infectious drum beats and African-inspired melodies. This is not about them though. This is the story of a cruise passenger, curiosity, and embracing life, no matter what people might say about you.

Besides having one of my favorite first names, Macduff Everton is also one of my favorite photographers. I had the privilege of traveling with him in British Columbia and was able to see why his Insta profile "visual anthropologist" is such an apt title. He picked quiet moments to engage people, asked questions and listened intently before evening thinking about raising his camera. When he did, brilliant. He can capture more than most people see.

Follow Macduff at @macduffeverton and look for his book, The Modern Maya on Amazon.

CULTIVATING WONDER:
In recent weeks, I've become a big fan ofThrive Global, Arianna Huffington's new venture that promotes a healthy lifestyle and worldview. Simply scrolling the stories will help you breathe easier. But this piece, "How Cultivating a Sense of Wonder Can Help You Become a Better Leader," hits at so much that I've found to be true in my own path with travel that I had to share it.

I am no fan of pigeons. But pigeons with tiny cameras on their bellies? Love. This is a interesting and strange look at essentially the first drone photographers. And if you ever doubt there is a solution to a certain problem, remember that someone thought of this.

59 National Parks. 52 weeks. In 2016, National Geographic Photographer Jonathan Irish and his partner, Stefanie Payne, celebrated the 100th Anniversary of North America's National Parks by visiting all of them (in an Air Stream!). Jonathan is one of my favorite photographers and the couple's book documenting their amazing journey (and our amazing National Parks!) is due out soon. It's going to be spectacular.

WOMAN WHO RETURNS:
Growing up, Heather Hatch always felt like something was missing. When she was 16, she learned of her roots in the Haida Nation and the remote archipelago of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. This beautiful video follows Heather and her grandmother as they reconnect with their ancestry and teach what it means to belong.

"We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves." I like to read this classic essay from travel writer Pico Iyer every year. Whether you're considering a country-spanning adventure or a quick getaway, Pico's introspection is universal.

"Lakes, mountains, dogs, repeat." So reads Rachel von Hahn's instagram profile. I'd also add, "dramatic, inspiring, awesome." All of her photos are fantastic and the ones with her dog are especially fun.

Stian Klo - This Norwegian landscape photographer is like a one man tourism board for Lofoten, Norway. He captures the archipelago's natural beauty with an almost otherworldly perspective.

Hi All!
Welcome to the Travel Tuesday Email, which goes out every other Tuesday and always offers interesting travel-related stories, a suggestion of social media personalities to follow and a quote to ponder.

AWESOMENESS ABROAD:
I am really taken with this story of Invisible Edinburgh, a social enterprise that trains homeless citizens to work as tour guides. This 5-minute video features two guides who have been at the bottom and are now living full lives, supporting themselves and enlightening tourists on a deeper level. If you find yourself in Edinburgh, take the tour!

LEARN FROM THE BEST:
Since Kitchen Confidential and No Reservations came on the scene, I've been listening to whatever Anthony Bourdain has to say.  CLICK HERE for a great new interview and piece on Anthony from MoneyLook for the term "nerd fury" and the brilliant travel advice tactic it stems from.  (And set your DVRs. The 11th season of Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown starts April 29th on CNN.)

WHO I'M FOLLOWING:
There are 40 million photos uploaded to Instagram every day. National Geographic photographer Aaron Huey posts some of my favorites. What I really love is that his son, Hawkeye Huey is an 8 year-old photographer with his own account (maintained by dad).  By following them you get both Hueys' perspectives on the world.  There's always something interesting, with that little something extra.  Check them out at @argonautphoto and @hawkeyehuey.
